"Best Dressed Girl In Memphis"

BEST DRESSED GIRL IN MEMPHIS
(234KB RealAudio File)
-Approx. 1 Minute DL time-

This great song was written by Walter Ramsey, a friend from Central Arkansas who is quite a good songwriter. I have had the pleasure of recording his demo's for the past 10 years. I have always thought that this song has the word HIT written all over it, so I asked Walter's permission to include it on my album. "Best Dressed Girl" was originally cut on 16-track back in 1993. Walter laid down the guide keyboard track and I played "live" drums on pads connected to my vintage Yamaha PTX8 drum synth. Later, I asked former bandmate Steve Koenemann ("Big Deluxe") to come in and play bass and guitars on the track. A few months later my good buddy Jurgen Lottmann was in the studio doing percussion overdubs on various projects and when I played the demo of this track he said he had "the perfect" conga part. Well, never the one to doubt Jurgen's judgement call, I placed the master tape on the machine and let him have a go at it. The resulting first take is what you hear on this sample. When it came time to transfer all the tracks over to 24-track for this project, Walter's original organ part somehow got deleted, so he made the trek up here a couple of months ago to re-record the organ parts. Walter tells me he wrote this song about a famous movie starlet who originally hailed from Memphis. Can you tell me who it is?

"Best Dressed Girl In Memphis"
(Walter Ramsey)

She was a beauty queen in Memphis
A girl with all the right moves
She could shake that thing in Memphis
Shake it until it almost shook loose
She was a girl who loved her fashion
A girl who loved to love
A girl who loved the passion
I'm talkin' 'bout the passion of
The Best Dressed Girl in Memphis
She was really something to see
She was the best dressed girl in Memphis
You might have caught her on the cover of seventeen

She had a face made for a Nikon
A body for SI
She tried everything in Memphis
That a good girl ought to try
She was a girl who loved her fashion
A girl you'd love to love
A girl who loved the passion
I'm talkin' 'bout the passion of
The Best Dressed Girl in Memphis
She's really got something that sells
She was the best dressed girl in Memphis
You might have caught her on the cover of Mademoiselle
(oh, well……)
