Bob's Career in Concert Promotion

While working as a DJ in Fort Smith, Arkansas, I made many contacts within the music business. I started getting calls from booking agencies. Fort Smith (being in the "middle of nowhere") as it turned out was just about the half-way point between Little Rock, Memphis, Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Kansas City, Dallas, and St. Louis. On many occasions a touring band might have a couple of slack days between large venues and could afford to offer me a considerable discount in their standard performance contract. With my connections in radio in the Fort Smith area I could also get a lot of mileage out of promotion and advertising. In addition, by conducting interviews with the band on my radio show I also made my boss very happy by increasing my radio audience.

My very first concert was with "Trapeze" in November, 1971, who were on their second US tour at the time. I had already made their acquaintance in Fayetteville a year previous (I had done some radio interviews with them when they appeared at the University Of Arkansas) and over the course of the following year I gave them heavy doses of airplay and apparently accounted for a considerable increase in the sale of their product in the region. We corresponded frequently and became good friends, so when they returned to the US in 1971 they made me an offer I couldn't refuse. They agreed to play a concert in Fort Smith for a ridiculous and pitiful amount of money if I would act as the concert promoter. Thus began my career as a concert promoter.

Over a period of four years I promoted or assisted in the promotion of many concerts in the Fort Smith area, including Black Oak Arkansas, Detroit with Mitch Ryder, Bloodrock, Jukin' Bone, Bang, The Lee Pickens Group, The Association, The Grass Roots, Sugarloaf, The Ides Of March, The Box Tops, The Gentrys, The Ilusion, Flaming Ember, and Styx.
